Would the last trainer to leave Goulburn for this Saturday’s Highway Handicap at Royal Randwick please turn out the lights!
This weekend that’s no exaggeration with the tablelands track supplying five runners from five different stables in this week’s edition of the popular country based all comers contest.
Kurt Goldman has the in-form Irish Songs in the race, the Shamus Award gelding is in the overtaking lane at present, having been minor placed in two highway races since resuming this prep. The three-year-old is yet to miss a place in two runs on heavy tracks and he currently heads up the TAB Fixed Odds market on the race at $3.30.
Top weight in the race is the John Bateman trained Show Me The Honey who was beaten less than three lengths in a Warwick Farm mid-weeker last start after being posted wide throughout. The consistent gelding has drawn the rails on Saturday and is also proven in slogging ground, something that should suit fourth up into his campaign.
Danny Williams’ ultra -reliable strike rate in Highway Handicaps is well known to punters and he is represented by Tootz on Saturday. The on-pace mare had her first crack at “a highway” when resuming and found the wide draw a tough ask. However, the proven wet tracker looks likely to get conditions to suit on Saturday with her record suggesting serious improvement is likely.
Conquest also tackles the Highway Handicap on Saturday for the Sarah Murray-Leslie yard and whilst the galloper sits wide in the market ($26) he should enjoy the six-kilo turnaround coming off a much sharper top four result at Wagga in a Class 2 event last start.
The fifth and final piece of Goulburn’s highway contribution comes from Tash Burleigh’s twenty-one strong yard. Recent acquisition Revitup Rednut came away from the latest Randwick instalment of “the highway” with more than petrol money after getting home hard into fourth. Currently a $7.50 chance, Revitup Rednut is stepping light with 53 kilos and is the type of galloper that puts in no matter the track conditions. From six starts on slow and heavy tracks he has managed minor placings on three occasions.

Goulburn will host its next race meeting on Friday 12th July with nominations closing Monday the 8th at 11.00am.
