Louise Day has enough ‘winter warrior’ experience to know what to expect at Goulburn this time of year and enough riding experience to know that nothing replaces hard work.

“I’m very much still enjoying the daily grind.  It’s a relentless lifestyle but thankfully one that is very rewarding if you put the work in,” Day offered.

A regular face at Goulburn in recent years Louise heads up the Hume on Friday with a neat book of five rides. All have form and fitness for trainers who know what it takes to win a race at the tablelands track.

Pat Murphy’s tough stayer It Is To Be ($10 TAB Fixed Odds) gives her a genuine presence in the opening race, The Hibernian Hotel Benchmark 58 Hcp over 2145m.

“He seems to like all types of going. He needs a genuinely run race up front, but has been going well and this looks like good placement,” Day said.

She also teams up with former local Anthony Warren on two chances. The lightly raced Dancer’s Delight ($9) went to the paddock a winner and resumes in the Homebase Real Estate Benchmark 58 Hcp over 1100m. No one better qualified than Day to assess where he’s at after steering the gelding in two recent trials.

“I’ve been excited to get him back to the races, the trials were great and he handles a heavy surface well.  I was a bit disappointed with the barrier at first but he’s a good horse and can overcome that.”

Vis I Do ($21) trades a weight hike for a class drop in the Lovell Meizer Funerals Benchmark 66 Handicap over 1200m. A kind draw backs up two solid showings to kick start the campaign and the hoop expects that sort of form to line up well.

“He looks very well placed coming back to country grade off a couple of great runs at the provincials. A little untested on the heavy tracks but this is a great race for him.”

Louise teams up with the Scott Collings camp in the final two races, the first a hard-fit Harlem Tickle ($61) who chases a breakout win over a mile in The Country Outfitters Maiden Plate.

“The horse looks ready for the rise in distance. She tries hard and is drawn to do no work early, hopefully a forward showing.”

Brass Monkeys ($5.50) backs up quickly in the final leg of Friday’s quaddie, the Skips Country Boosted Benchmark 58 Handicap over 1400m after trying hard behind a progressive horse last start.

“He has been racing well and finds another race to be competitive in after drawing well.”

A strong finish to this season is something Day would like to nail down to help her roll into the next.

“You can never stop improving and learning in this game and success is very dependent on that and also good support from owners and trainers.”

“I’m looking forward to next season with some promising horses coming back from their breaks, and hopefully continuing to grow support and get better opportunities.”

Goulburn Race Club acknowledges the support of Friday’s race day partners including The Hibernian Hotel, Aureum Finance, Douglass Blinds and Security Screens, Homebase Real Estate, Lovell Meizer Funerals, The Country Outfitters Skips Country.

Goulburn’s track is currently rated a Soft 7 with the opening race timed to go at 12.35pm.
