In an ideal world, your stable acquires a lightly raced horse and it wins two on the bounce…welcome to ‘Collings world’ where Romanticism has done just that.
The three-year-old filly has put a schism into her opposition winning two on the bounce by a combined three lengths since coming into Scott Collings’ care late last year.
A sharp trial win prior to Christmas gave Collings confidence in what she might produce.
“She came to us in very good order from Tom Kelly’s Suffolkvale property so we had a good platform to work with. Her Victorian form was okay so we knew she could gallop it was more just working on her racing style”, Collings offered.
A first up maiden win at Gundagai was followed by a breezy class one victory on her home track. Collings settling on Friday’s Brad Writer Constructions Class 3 Handicap (1200m) as her next home track assignment.
“After missing the Light Fingers this race worked out well for her. It was a minor setback but given the opposition and class of that race we thought we’d reset.”
Collings says like most that can gallop there’s a bit of ‘ying and yang’ to her personality.
“She has her moments but she’s not too bad overall. She was a little hot to handle early on but she’s getting better each time we send her to the races.”
“Her turn of foot is rather explosive. She looks to be doing it easily but runs a slick last 600m. She’s a blueblood filly being by a Golden Slipper winner out of a Slipper runner up so she’s a classy type just off her pedigree alone.”
The Collings yard has raced into the new year in cracking form producing four winners and another eight placings from its last twenty runners, the man with his name on the door happy to deflect the credit.
“Since moving to a twenty-horse barn here at Goulburn we feel we’ve got a good handle on things right now. The team is ticking over nicely.”
“I’ve got a great team around me. Since my fall I’ve had to take a step back from riding but I’ve got great staff and that’s why the horses are racing so well.”
“Mogo Magic is racing consistently in high benchmark Sydney races, new addition One Destiny landed a nice result for us first-up at Newcastle last weekend and horses like Zoutempus and some nice maidens coming through are keeping the wheels turning on a weekly basis.”
Collings has made Goulburn a home track playground of late producing a winner at each of the past two tablelands meetings.
Despite looking unlikely to produce an Evergreen Turf Country Championships qualifier this year Collings still has great memories of last year’s Southern Wildcard win at Goulburn.
“It was a thrill to win the race last year with Ticklebelly before going on to run fifth in the final. She will trial after the last on the Southern Wildcard day as she heads towards the Wagga Town Plate.”
Collings has five acceptors on Friday’s Goulburn program including The Glen (Dale Cole) and debutante Cruizingthestars (Pierre Boudvillain) in the opener, Romanticism (Pierre Boudvillain) in Race 2, Zoutempus (Nick Heywood) in Race 4 whilst Foursixty Squadron (Richard Bensley) tackles Race 5.
Goulburn’s track is currently rated a Soft 5 with Race 1 timed to go at 1.00pm.
