Whilst the Goulburn Cup was the feature it was local filly Lady Kah who stole the show on Sunday by winning the Newgate Farm The Guy Walter at just start number two.
The Emma & Lucy Longmire trained galloper was super impressive in winning the F&M Class three contest. In front of a large contingent of connections she let down stylishly in the straight for apprentice Amy McLucas to record a very popular win.
The filly had announced herself with a silky-smooth debut win earlier in the month but yesterday was deeper water for her. The stable was mindful of that but still confident she would aim up.
“It wasn’t really a surprise as she has improved in her gallops since her debut run,” Emma Longmire said after the exhilarating win.
“We knew she had a big task in front of her and it was a big jump in grade but we believe she is a filly with plenty of potential”
The numbers back that up with the filly clocking 34.12 for her last 600m, the slickest of the day on the Good 3 rated tablelands track. Winning the race named in honour of the late great Guy Walter was also an emotional result for the stable.
“Lucy had worked for Guy Walter for many years and we have dreamed of having a horse good enough to win this race and it means so much to get that win”, Emma added.
The stable has a few options with the filly now, knowing they have a ‘Kah’ that can really motor.
“We’ll see how she comes through the run. We’ll certainly look at Highway and some three-year-old race options with her. She could easily be a country championships contender”, Ms Longmire added.
Willie Pike also shone in the saddle producing a winning tablelands treble as he piloted early winners for the Danny Williams (Atmospheric Rock) and Waterhouse-Bott (Gold Witness) stables.
Pike then produced the perfect ‘poise and pounce’ ride on Oscar Zulu to win the Goulburn Soldiers Club Goulburn Cup for the Chris Waller camp. Oscar Zulu proved too strong first up to win by a length from Joe Pride’s brave runner up Coal Crusher.
The spring racing tradition continues this coming Saturday at Goulburn with its popular Girls Day Out event.
