GOULBURN PROGRAM HAS AN “AIR OF QUALITY” ABOUT IT (TUESDAY)

GOULBURN PROGRAM HAS AN “AIR OF QUALITY” ABOUT IT (TUESDAY)

Like a number of clubs across the state Goulburn took an indirect hit from the NSW Bushfires when its most recent and final race meeting for 2019 on the 20th December was called off due to the impact of smoke and poor air quality in the tablelands.

The club kick starts its 2020 race day offering on Tuesday with a seven-race bounce back program that has an ‘air of quality’ about it and Goulburn trainers in red hot form of late.

Goulburn Race Club CEO Robyn Fife says despite not having raced for over a month, the club’s trainers have been flying the flag strongly across the state.

“Goulburn trainers have really hit the ground running in the New Year. We have seen local trainers win three TAB Highway Handicaps since late December, (Wayne Hudd, Danielle Seib and John Bateman). Included in those results was a little bit of history with an all Goulburn ‘Highway’ trifecta on the 4th January,” Ms Fife said.

Ms Fife also pointed out that it’s not just in the big smoke that Goulburn horses have been prominent of late.

“We also had Tash Burleigh and the Longmire twins quinella a race at Wagga last week and Wayne Hudd also won a race on the same program as well.”

Ms Fife said the club is looking forward to a busy start to the 2020 racing season.

“Including Tuesday’s race day we have three meetings scheduled over the next month, with

Goulburn also hosting two Sunday meetings on the 9th and 23rd February respectively.”

Tuesday’s card has attracted ninety-five acceptors with a generous smattering of city, provincial and country trained gallopers.

Regular city visitors to the tablelands such as team Snowden, Bjorn Baker, Matthew Smith, Gary Portelli, Gerald Ryan and the Waterhouse-Bott yard have sharpened up the fields with some handily bred gallopers. Think progeny from sires like Deep Field, More Than Ready, Zoustar and I Am Invincible and you get the idea.

Provincial and country gallopers also make up over half of the aspirants on Tuesday’s program, with the Class 4 Country Championship Preview race one of the highlights.

Goulburn’s track is currently rated a Soft 5 with the first race on Tuesday timed to go at 1.50pm.
