Golden Slipper translated into French is D’or Chaussure and up Goulburn way this week they might just be calling former French trainer Jean Dubois “D’or Dubois” after his 2YO colt Aylmerton took the short cuts home to win the Group 2 Todman Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.
On a card full of black type racing it was the French tricolour that shone through for Dubois, jockey Andrew Adkins and the smart running colt Aylmerton.
Horse and jockey provided the tablelands trainer with his inaugural group training success in Australia in dramatic fashion after the hot favourite in the race, Performer, dumped Hugh Bowman with less than a furlong to run.
Drawn the rail, Aylmerton hugged it like a lure, never needing to go around a horse to greet the judge first.
Piloted astutely by the recently fully fledged Andrew Adkins, Aylmerton and Dubois now find themselves with a genuine shot at a Golden Slipper, the horse now a $15 chance in the TAB Fixed Odds market.
Having quickly built a reputation on these shores as a trainer with a with a smart strike rate, Dubois notched his zenith on Saturday, overstepping his previous high water mark of back to back Highway Handicaps with Mate Story.
Speaking after the race Dubois likened the day as a dream come true, telling the press …
“It is a miracle. You always dream of things like this but don’t believe it can happen,” Dubois said.
Goulburn Race Club CEO Robyn Fife says the club is thrilled for Dubois and his team and will be cheering him and Aylmerton on come Golden Slipper Day.
“Jean has been using the Goulburn facilities as a trainer now for about 2 years” Ms Fife said.
“He adds an international flavour to the place and it has been great to see him achieve training success here in NSW”.
“The club and its directors wish him well in the countdown to the Longines Golden Slipper on Saturday 24th March.”
Goulburn Race Club will hold its next meeting this Thursday 15th March with acceptances due by 9.00am Tuesday. Goulburn’s track is currently rated a Good 4 for the meeting.
