Goulburn District Race Club will hold its blue-ribbon day of the racing calendar this Sunday (26th November) with the highlight being the $150 000 JCF Contracting Goulburn Cup.
2017 is the first year that the Goulburn Cup has been worth $150 000, with Racing NSW recently announcing an additional $50 000 in prizemoney for this year and beyond.
The prizemoney elevates the status of the race from “not just another country cup” to a genuine racing option for city, provincial, country trainers and their gallopers.
Goulburn District Race Club CEO, Robyn Fife, believes the prizemoney increase has been a real boost for the club and its primary audience, trainers and owners.
“The prizemoney increase is further recognition for the Goulburn District Race Club by Racing NSW. The Goulburn Cup is a well-established feature race in NSW and has attracted horses from both intra and interstate in previous years,” Ms Fife said.
“This year is the 133rd running of the race and the added prizemoney allows us to further develop the “major event” mind set within the racing and Goulburn community about our feature day.”
Ms Fife also welcomed the support of Spendthrift Stud Australia on Cup day.
“We are pleased to have Spendthrift Stud on board on cup day as well this year through their support of the fourth running of Guy Walter Filles & Mares race. As well as the prizemoney winning connections also secure a Spendthrift stallion service option.”
Ms Fife also believes the that Goulburn Cup has proven itself a race for quality horses on the improve in recent times.
“Horses who have performed well in the race in the past like Any Day Will Do, Moral Victory and last year’s winner Circular have then gone on to post very competitive results in elite races shortly after their Goulburn Cup runs”.
Nominations for the Goulburn Cup close 11.00am Tuesday with final acceptances taken 9.00am Thursday.
