Goulburn District Race Club has received a significant shot in the arm with news that its feature race on the calendar, The Goulburn Cup, will be worth an additional $50 000 in 2017 and beyond.
Racing NSW has announced a further boost for country racing with a significant increase in prizemoney for a number of key country feature races with the Goulburn Cup one of five races targeted around the state.
The recently announced prizemoney increase gives the race a total value of $150 000 and makes it a genuine lure for trainers from major stables in NSW and Victoria.
The prizemoney increase is further recognition for the Goulburn District Race Club by the peak industry body and bolsters the club’s already strong connection with city, provincial and country trainers and their gallopers.
Racing NSW Chief Executive, Mr Peter V’landys AM, believes the prizemoney increase is well targeted.
“These are well-established country feature races. The increase will provide impetus for the clubs to further develop these race meetings and build their recognition not only within racing, but to their local community,” V’landys said.
Goulburn District Race Club President Ken Ikin welcomed the announcement by Racing NSW for its flagship race that is held in November each year.
“The increased prizemoney for the Goulburn Cup and the ‘vote of confidence’ it represents for the Goulburn District Race Club is tremendous recognition,” Mr Ikin said.
“That recognition applies to the club and all of our stakeholders including staff,trainers,sponsors and members.”
“In recent times the Goulburn Cup has built a reputation as a race for horses on the way up.”
“Gallopers who have performed well in our feature race in the past include Any Day Will Do, Moral Victory and last year’s winner Circular. All of these horses have then gone on to post very competitive results in elite races shortly after their Goulburn Cup runs”.
“The prize money increase will further cement the reputation of the club and its facilities as a sought after racing venue for trainers, owners and their horses throughout NSW.”
Goulburn District Race Club’s next meeting will be on Monday 14th August with the first race commencing at 12.30pm.
