Goulburn trainers stood tall on their home track yesterday, notching wins in three of the eight races contested on the day.
In race meeting hosting plenty of depth and an array of visiting trainers it was the home grown gallopers that stole the show by making the early races on the card their own.
One of the most popular wins on the day was that of the John Bateman trained COMMON PURPOSE. The gelding was just about ready to pay rent on the runner up stall at Goulburn after notching four consecutive seconds on his home track in his first four starts. However, he was able to hold off all challengers in race four, a maiden over 1500m to breakthrough for a well deserved win despite carrying sixty kilos.
The Danny Williams stable had earlier hinted that a big day might be in store for the locals by producing debutante CARTEL to win the opening event. The two-year-old started a popular elect with punters but looked a forlorn hope at the six hundred metre mark, spotting the leaders almost eight lengths. From there though the Street Boss colt turned heads with an explosive last furlong that secured the major prize and a winning start for local trainers.
SALESMAN then continued the winning theme for Goulburn stabled runners by delivering in race two, a class two event over the 1000m. Resuming off a spell for the Sarah Murray-Leslie stable, the consistent three-year-old took the lead at the top of the straight and fought on strongly in the run home with apprentice Jean Overmeire in the saddle.
Goulburn Secretary Manager Robyn Fife said the winning results for local trainers topped off what was a strong race meeting.
“We were thrilled to host a strong contingent of visiting trainers and owners anyway, but to see our local horses do so well is a real credit to both our trainers and our track facilities,” Ms Fife said.
